Fabrizio Romano now says English defender linked with move to Newcastle United is likely to change clubs this month
Newcastle United are leaving it exceptionally late if they are going to do any business in the January window, but while there's still time left, there's still hope.
The Magpies have reportedly been hoping to strengthen their defence this month, especially given the number of injuries through the squad, but so far, nothing has really moved the needle beyond the rumour phase.
One player who was mentioned earlier in the window was Genoa's Brooke Norton-Cuffy, who was seen as an ideal Newcastle target.
The 22-year-old has Premier League experience as well as Serie A experience, and is young enough that he has many years ahead of him and can be moulded by Eddie Howe.
Everton and one other Premier League club are keen on Brooke Norton-Cuffy
Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano has now posted on X that he expects Brooke Norton-Cuffy to leave Genoa this month and mentions Everton and one other Premier League team as being interested.
"Brooke Norton-Cuffy could leave Genoa before the end of the January window.
"Clubs have re-started calling, Everton and one more Premier League clubs while Serie A sides are also keen."
Newcastle weren't mentioned by name by Fabrizio Romano
I checked out the video in Romano's post, and it's in Italian, but I tried to pick out Newcastle's name as the potential other Premier League club, but didn't hear it. The only other club mentioned besides Everton was Arsenal, and I assume that was just a reference to where Genoa signed him from.
We'd expect that if Everton is the named club, they're better placed to get the deal done than the unnamed club, whether that be Newcastle or someone else.
We are becoming more convinced that there will be no new additions for Eddie Howe to play with this month.
