Newcastle United have agreed a deal with Blackburn Rovers for promising young midfielder Rory Finneran, according to reports.

The young Irishman was linked with a move away from Rovers all season with several Premier League clubs eyeing a move for the prospect.

Newcastle were one of the clubs interested in the youngster who made history by becoming Blackburn's youngest-ever player to make an appearance when he came off the bench in the FA Cup third-round win over Cambridge United aged just 15 years and 312 days.

Now, the Magpies look to have struck a deal with the 16-year-old who turned down the opportunity to sign a scholarship with Rovers last month.

According to football super journalist Fabrizio Romano, a verbal agreement has been put in place between Newcastle and the Republic of Ireland U17's captain.

Finneran is another young player set to embark on a journey with the Magpies youth setup which aims to be one of the best in the continent in the coming years.

The 16-year-old made seven appearances for Rovers in the Premier League 2 last season as well as five appearances in the U18's Premier League.
