Fabian Schar's Switzerland have knocked holders Italy out of the European Championships with a thoroughly convincing 2-0 win this evening.

We wonder how the Italian Football Federation are feeling about their decision to ban Sandro Tonali for 10 months now, because they really could have done with him this evening as Italy were completely outclassed by Switzerland.

The European Championship trophy will definitely find a new home this summer after the holders seemed completely disinterested in retaining their title.

Switzerland always looked in control of the game with Fabian Schar coming in for a lot of praise from the BBC commentary team despite almost conceding an own goal when he nodded the ball off his own upright. This is his fourth game in the tournament, completing the full 90 in every game. Not bad considering he looked like he was going to be used as backup not too long ago.

Both Switzerland goals were a thing of beauty

Two superb goals, one in each half, saw Italy packing their bags for an early return home as Switzerland, who have impressed all tournament, continue to march on.

Nottingham Forest's Remo Freuler scored an excellent goal in the first half, taking a fizzing cross in his stride and teeing himself up for a close-range volley beyond Gianluigi Donnarumma.

Ruben Vargas doubled the lead just 30 seconds into the second half with a beautiful curling effort into the top corner.

Newcastle United are guaranteed a representative in the Euro semi-finals

Newcastle United fans will be watching on tomorrow to see which, if either of their non-English club representatives can knock the Three Lions out of the tournament.

Martin Dubravka is up first as he will be in goal for Slovakia tomorrow evening as England try to progress through to the quarter-final stages, and if they do that, then Fabian Schar awaits the victors.

This of course means, that Newcastle United will have at least one representative in the Euro 2024 semi-finals, but hopefully, we have two, as that would mean that England have made it that far. The upside of being knocked out, however, is that will more than definitely spell the end of Gareth Southgate as England boss.
