Eddie Howe says Bruno Guimaraes injury is a 'worry' after Newcastle United captain withdrew in first half in win over PSV
Overall, it was a fantastic night for Newcastle United in the Champions League on Wednesday night as they comfortably beat PSV 3-0 at St James' Park.
Goals from Yoane Wissa, Anthony Gordon and Harvey Barnes saw the Magpies place themselves amongst seven sides on 13 points going into the final league game of the competition next week.
Newcastle's goal difference puts them in the top eight, which qualify for the knock-out phase automatically, while the next 22 sides in the table go into a two-legged play-off.
It wasn't all good news for the Magpies, though, as Bruno Guimaraes picked up a knock in the first half and, after trying to play on, signalled to the bench to come off.
Eddie Howe says Bruno Guimaraes' injury is a worry
When Bruno signals to be taken off, you know it's bad, which was pretty much Eddie Howe's reaction last night when asked about the captain's condition in his post-match presser (h/t Newcastle World).
“Yeah, a little bit sore. It's an ankle problem. A little bit of swelling in his ankle. Having just seen him, we hope it's not serious. Difficult to know.
“I think Bruno is the type of player that never wants to come off. He always wants to play, so the fact he has come off is a worry for us.
“We'll do everything we can to get him fit as quickly as possible.”
Bruno is very likely to miss the game against Aston Villa on Sunday
It sounds as though Bruno will almost certainly miss the visit of Aston Villa on Sunday, and it's touch-and-go whether he'll be available for the Champions League showdown in Paris next week.
Newcastle's record without Bruno in the side is terrible, so we'll be keeping everything crossed that it's just a minor knock and the Brazilian won't be on the sidelines for long.
Bruno posted on Instagram after the game last night, but didn't give much away about his injury.
"Mixed feelings! Happy with the team’s great performance and the three points. I hope the injury isn’t too serious and that I can be back on the pitch doing what I love most as soon as possible. Howay the lads 🖤🤍3️⃣9️⃣"
