Newcastle United are set to face Chelsea for the second time in a week and will be hoping for a better result this time around in the Carabao Cup at St James' Park - Kick-off is 7:45pm live on Sky Sports.

After suffering a 2-1 defeat at Stamford Bridge in the Premier League on Sunday, Newcastle will be hoping to get one over on Chelsea this time around, especially it was the Blues who knocked Newcastle out of this competition last season via a penalty shootout.

We expected Eddie Howe to make plenty of changes to the XI that faced Chelsea on Sunday, albeit not as many as we expected Enzo Maresca to make.

Howe has made changes, but he's also managed to put out a strong side as well.

We were way off

Eddie Howe has gone without either Jacob Murphy and Miguel Almiron

After missing Sunday's game with a groin injury, Anthony Gordon returns to the starting lineup after being given the all-clear. We didn't think Howe would risk him so soon and thought he might rest him ahead of the Arsenal game on Saturday, but Howe is staying true to his word in that he is going for it in the cup.

We were convinced that Lewis Miley would start tonight but we were wrong about that one. Meanwhile Dan Burn drops to the bench which means, as we mentioned could be a possibility, Lewis Hall will play left-back with Lloyd Kelly at centre-back alongside captain for the night, Fabian Schar with Emil Krafth at right-back.

Sandro Tonali and Joelinton retain their places in the starting XI with Sean Longstaff replacing Bruno Guimaraes. Joe Willock looks to be playing as a right winger or Gordon could be on the right with Willock on the left.

Enzo Maresca has made 11 changes from Sunday

Alexander Isak will be given the opportunity to right his wrong from the weekend with Will Osula having to make do with a place on the bench.

As we expected, Enzo Maresca is fielding what seems to be an entirely different starting XI to the one who lined up at Stamford Bridge.

A few of tonight's starting players came on as substitutes on Sunday. It really does show the gulf in the depth of quality in both squads that this Chelsea side still looks very dangerous.
