Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe has commented on the future of Brazilian midfielder Bruno Guimaraes, referring to him as "such an important player."

The Magpies have jetted off to Japan for their pre-season tour where they will take on Urawa Reds on Wednesday before facing Yokohama F Marinos on Saturday.

Guimaraes joined the squad in Tokyo on Sunday after returning from his extended holiday due to his participation in the Copa America.

The 26-year-old is expected to feature in both games this week.

Guimaraes is an influential figure at Newcastle United

Guimaraes joined the Magpies in early 2022 and has become one of Howe's most relied-upon stars.

In October 2023, the Brazilian international signed a new five-year deal to keep him at the club until 2028. Fans were concerned when they heard murmurs of a £100million release clause which could lure the likes of Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain.

On Guimaraes' release clause, Howe said: “His release clause was never something on my mind.

“I don’t think it was on his mind either but of course it was there and I am really delighted it has passed with nothing happening.

"Now we can focus on him being at Newcastle and having another season like he did last year."

Howe praises "such an important player"

Guimaraes has previously stated that he would like to captain Newcastle during his time here, with the possibility of Kieran Trippier departing and a long-term injury to club captain Jamaal Lascelles it's looking like his wish could come true this season.

“He is such an important player for us," Howe said.

"You can see the boost that he gave the group today to have him back with us for the first time on the training pitch.

"He’s been a galvanising player for us for the last two years.

"I think I speak on behalf of everybody who wants to see Bruno on the pitch wearing a black and white shirt and happy and content and absolutely ready to drive the team forward again."
