Eddie Howe gives reporter blunt response after being asked 'silly question' following Newcastle United's Champions League progression
Eddie Howe was in a bullish mood after Newcastle United secured their place in the Champions League knockout phase last night at St James' Park.
Newcastle completed their task of seeing out the result against Qarabag, adding a 3-2 win to their impressive 6-1 lead, ensuring their name is in Friday's draw for the last 16.
It was a strange old game at St James' Park with so little on the line, and when Newcastle scored two goals in the opening six minutes, it killed the game off as a spectacle early on.
Newcastle just had to coast through to the full-time whistle, and that's precisely what they did.
Eddie Howe responded brilliantly to a poorly worded question
It all felt a bit too easy, and that must have inspired Eddie Howe, who gave a very confident response when asked in his press conference how far he wants to go in the competition.
“That’s a silly question. As far as we can. Why not? We’re good enough. We’ve raised our game in one-off matches, even in the Carabao Cup.
“The disappointment has been returning to the Premier League and lacking consistency. We need a remedy for that. But we want to go far in this.”
Newcastle excel in cup competitions
It was a poorly-worded question for sure, although imagine if Howe had responded by saying that we've gone far enough and won't bother trying in the next round.
But we love that there is a belief that we can go all the way and that we aren't just there to make up the numbers.
Newcastle are strong in cup competitions under Eddie Howe and have sprung a fair few surprises in knock-out games so far. When you look at our route to winning the Carabao Cup, we didn't have it easy at all, but we did what we needed to. Why can't we do that in Europe?
