Newcastle United made easy work of their Spanish opponents in Friday night's Sela Weekender game as they hammered Girona 4-0 at St James' Park.

In truth, 4-0 was slightly flattering to the visiting side as Alexander Isak and Ben Parkinson missed some gilt-edged chances, one of which was from the penalty spot.

Regardless, it was a good run out for the side with a few key players getting in plenty of minutes. Joelinton is looking back to his best and we can't wait to see him in action next week.

Eddie Howe spoke to Sky Sports' Keith Downie after the game and naturally, the subject of transfers came up with Howe admitting that deals are being worked on.

Eddie Howe is expecting at least one more addition

It was a message of hope from Howe, but something he said has got us scratching our heads a bit at first.

“The transfer window is picking up now. We are hoping to add at least one player to the group. But it has to be about quality rather than quantity.

“If you’re going to add players they have to push the group to new levels. That’s what we are looking for — which is very difficult to find. There’s not many players that will make us better.”

We assume that one player is Marc Guehi and that's great, but we all know how much we need a right winger - regardless of how good Jacob Murphy has been in pre-season.

Newcastle have a strong core of players who we'd struggle to improve upon

The concerning, or at least confusing part was "There's not many players that will make us better." - Surely he's just saying that to pump up the lads he already has, because there are plenty of players who could make us better.

This summer alone we've mentioned probably four or five right wingers who would make us better, a few strikers who improve the side. We have a lot of top talent in some key areas around the pitch, many of whom we wouldn't change for anyone - Bruno Guimaraes, Alexander Isak, Joelinton, Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali could probably find himself in that category.

That still leaves plenty of positions that could be improved.

In all seriousness, we do completely understand what Howe is saying here, but when you first read it, your brain instantly starts rattling off players who could make us better. They just probably aren't available or not interested.
