Newcastle United fans were pleased to see Sven Botman's name on the teamsheet as the Magpies geared up to take on Chelsea at St James' Park this afternoon.

Sven Botman has not had much luck over the past couple of seasons with injuries, particularly knee injuries.

His long-awaited comeback after undergoing ACL surgery was short-lived as his other knee started acting up and also required minor surgery.

He has since made a couple of brief appearances for Newcastle, but today's game against Chelsea was his first start in a long time.

Eddie Howe revealed that Sven Botman was feeling some discomfort in his knee

With Newcastle one goal and one man up in the second half, Eddie Howe made his first change just ten minutes into the second period, and it was Botman who was withdrawn to be replaced by Lewis Miley, which indicated a change in shape for the Magpies too.

However, after the game, Eddie Howe confirmed to the media that it wasn't purely a tactical decision to take Botman off.

"He was slightly uncomfortable in the half time break with a knee problem. I don't think it's serious. He was obviously OK to carry on but he was feeling something so, tactically, I thought it would help us to change."

Jamaal Lascelles return from injury could be perfect timing

That will be a huge worry for Eddie Howe and Botman, but it is probably to be expected that they aren't willing to take any risks when it comes to his knees.

Meanwhile, Jamaal Lascelles took up a spot on the bench today. The club captain went under the knife at the same time as Botman for the same thing, but today was the first time we've seen him all season.

We doubt Eddie Howe will resort to playing Lascelles unless he really has no other choice, as he wasn't expected to be involved this season.
