Newcastle United head coach Eddie Howe has admitted that he has "no idea" how close the club are to a new arrival this summer.

The Magpies took on Urawa Red Diamonds earlier today in the first of two pre-season tour games in the land of the rising sun.

Howe's side left the Saitama Stadium 4-1 victors thanks to an Alexander Isak opener followed by a brace from Jacob Murphy rounded up with Lewis Hall finding the net before the hour.

The game saw one of Newcastle's new signings, Odysseas Vlachodimos get some minutes off the bench.

Howe has no update on Newcastle transfers

Howe spoke to the press following the result and was asked for an update regarding any potential incoming players ahead of the new season.

“I hope so but I’ve got no idea how close things are. Howe said regarding new incomings.

"I hope so. We’re working hard to try and make that happen."

Toon fans were dealt a hammer blow when Malick Thiaw's agent announced that no agreement had been made between the two clubs despite reports suggesting otherwise.

With the season just over two weeks away the pressure is slowly building for Howe and Co to generate some more transfer market activity.

No sign of Lloyd Kelly for Newcastle today

Discounting Lewis Hall whose loan move was made permanent this summer. Only one new summer signing made an appearance in the Urawa win.

One new signing, Lloyd Kelly was nowhere to be seen despite travelling with the squad to Japan.

He also failed to feature in last Saturday's win at Hull City. John Ruddy was an unused substitute.

Youth players Cathal Heffernan, Trevan Sanusi, Alfie Harrison, Jay Turner-Cooke, Ben Parkinson and Jamie Miley all featured.
