Deja Vu - Celtic could reignite interest in 'excellent' Newcastle United man despite recently signing new deal

We are expecting plenty of activity in the transfer market this summer around Newcastle United, and while we expect the majority of the deals will be for incoming players, there is still plenty of scope for a few exits too.

Whether players leave due to their contracts expiring, like Callum Wilson and Jamaal Lascelles could do, or if they are sold like we expect to happen to Sean Longstaff, there are a few players teetering on the edge.

One player has been on the cusp of leaving in both of the last two transfer windows but a run in the first-team due to injury, and great form while covering for Nick Pope this season, saw Martin Dubravka handed a contract extension at Newcastle.

Last summer it looked for all the world that Dubravka was heading to Celtic before they pivoted to former Leicester City 'keeper Kasper Schmeichel.

Martin Dubravka practically had his bags packed in January

When the January transfer window came around, Dubravka practically had his bags packed ready to head to Saudi Arabia with Al-Shabab before Eddie Howe convinced him to stay at the Toon a bit longer.

Nick Pope was still a couple of weeks away from fitness and Dubravka had been playing well, the only way to keep him on was to offer him a contract extension. Dubravka signed on the dotted line and then just days later he was dropped for the return of Nick Pope.

It now feels inevitable that the 36-year-old, dubbed 'excellent' by his agent, David Zika, will move on at the end of this season with The Chronicle reporting that Celtic could be interested in a summer move once again.

We wouldn't blame Dubravka for wanting to leave

After being begged to stay and then being immediately dropped after signing a new deal, we expect that Dubravka will be itching for a move this summer.

As professional as the Slovakian has been since the turn of the year, there's only so much a man can take.

It will likely not cost very much for anyone to take Dubravka away from St James' Park, so if Celtic can offer him plenty of first-team opportunities, we could see him move north of the border.
