David Hopkinson talks about PIF's ambitions for Newcastle United as question marks appear following poor transfer window
Newcastle United failed to add anyone to their squad in the January transfer window despite there being a glaring need for fresh faces and new ideas.
It was another frustrating window for the club that many (incorrectly) label as the 'Richest Club In The World'. Despite the reality being very well known that Newcastle are far from the richest club, they may have the richest owners, but the likes of PSR make it impossible for the club to access their owners' money.
PSR is going away before next season, but still remains a very real concern right now, and in fairness, even the new restrictions coming in don't open the door very much wider for Newcastle, if indeed they do at all.
So Newcastle are still very wary about over-spending and that was evident when David Hopkinson spoke about the January window to talkSPORT this morning.
Newcastle United were extremely busy in January despite not making any signings
Newcastle CEO, David Hopkinson, said that January was an 'extraordinary window', albeit one that bore no fruit.
“Let me tell you, this was an extraordinary transfer window in terms of activity. We have an amazing sporting director in Ross Wilson. He’s been my first call in the morning and last call at night every day this month.
“The activity has been incredibly high. We didn’t find the right opportunity for an acquisition but we had the room to do so.”
David Hopkinson insists the PIF's ambitions for Newcastle United reflect his own
That answer led to a follow-up question where Jim White spoke about Stefan Borson's claims that the PIF have potentially lost interest in Newcastle United, which Hopkinson immediately shut down.
“The No.1 thing I talk to the ownership about is ambition. That’s the magic word here.
“We have total alignment on that. This is a club that, by 2030, will be consistently contending for the top prizes in global football. We have a lot of wood to chop between here and there. When I see Newcastle United, everywhere I look, I see opportunity.”
