Dan Burn makes poignant comparison between Eddie Howe and Sir Bobby Robson as he reveals biggest disappointment this season
Dan Burn is in a pretty unique position as a Newcastle United player in that he's one of the rare few players to represent the club after growing up attending the games as a fan.
There are a few who have gone before, and there are others in the squad who grew up as fans of the club, but Burn was a die-hard who attended the games and sang on the terraces as a kid.
He watched from the stands as Sir Bobby Robson was hounded out of the club after a run of poor performances (this is, of course, the over-simplified version of events).
Speaking to Prime Video (h/t The Chronicle) ahead of tonight's game against Qarabag, Dan Burn drew a parallel between the crowd turning on Robson 20 years ago and the reaction from the crowd after the defeat to Brentford.
Dan Burn would hate to see Eddie Howe's Newcastle career go the way of Sir Bobby Robson's
Newcastle United's players were booed off the pitch after falling to a 3-2 defeat to Brentford at St James' Park, and Dan Burn told Gabriel Clark that he was disappointed that the team had let him down, and led him to have to face the media and practically apologise for the performance.
"I was surprised that he had to and I was disappointed in us as a team that he felt like he had to do that. I feel like we let him down, but we’ve since spoken about this and tried to put things right.
"We need to look at the bigger picture and look at how far we’ve come as I feel this has happened before, with Sir Bobby, where he was forced out too early, and I’d hate to see a repeat of that.”
Newcastle have turned a corner since that disappointing defeat
Thankfully, the team have turned things around, and Howe has won the crowd back. Well, those who are willing to be won over, at least, he still has his detractors, obviously.
A big win against what we imagine will be a very tired Qarabag side tonight will certainly send a big message.
We expect Dan Burn to be involved in that game tonight, as Eddie Howe's squad is thinner than that book titled "Sunderland AFC's adventures in Europe".
