Dan Burn gives honest assessment of controversy surrounding disallowed goal for Newcastle United against Manchester City
As proud as we are of the lads for their battling display down at the Etihad Stadium last night, we can't help feel that Newcastle United should have come away from the game against Manchester City with at least a point.
Manchester City twice took the lead via Nico O'Reilly after Lewis Hall restored parity between the youngster's brace, but Dan Burn also had the ball in the back of the net from a well-worked free-kick routine.
Unfortunately for Burn, the brick outhouse of a linesman on the far side put his flag up to signal for offside, and well, we wouldn't argue with him.
In fairness, Burn was in an offside position when the free-kick was taken, but he was only in that position because Ruben Dias had pushed him beyond the line.
Dan Burn confirms he was pushed into an offside position by Ruben Dias
Dan Burn told NUFC TV after the game that he hadn't seen the incident back, but he confirmed he definitely felt a push.
“Yeah, I've not seen it again to be honest.I felt sort of pushed on the back and I think maybe if I'm a little bit better with it I could probably make more of a meal of it, but I'm not great at doing that.
“So yeah, I've not seen it back, but as I said someone said that I was pushed and it's quite hard to get back onside once you've been sort of pushed offside.”
Dan Burn admits he'd have done the same as Ruben Dias
Burn also told Viaplay Football that he'd have done the same thing as Dias, so he didn't seem to have hard feelings about the incident.
“Yes, he did [push me]. But as a defender, I do the same thing.”
Instead, Burn was just proud of the overall performance from the lads, saying that it was probably the best Newcastle have played at the Etihad. We agree, Dan. But it would be nice for the referees to do their job properly too.
