As the transfer deadline creeps up, Newcastle United's hopes of doing any incoming business were minuscule to say the least.

Newcastle, despite being in desperate need for fresh faces in the eyes of many a fan, have opted to keep their money in their pockets this month and will instead focus on the summer window.

However, on Saturday night, Eddie Howe hinted that there was one player who could arrive on Tyneside before the 7pm deadline.

When Howe faced the media at Anfield, he admitted that they were still discussing the possibility of recalling Matt Targett from Middlesbrough.

Newcastle have opted not to recall Matt Targett from Middlesbrough

The left-back is on loan down at Boro and has enjoyed a solid season, not only managing to stay fit but also putting in some impressive performances.

Targett is said to be enjoying his time there and Middlesbrough certainly didn't want to lose him, and now it looks like they won't.

Craig Hope posted on X this morning that Newcastle have decided not to recall Targett which means his time at Newcastle is now effectively over.

Matt Targett will leave the club this summer when his contract expires

The 30-year-old's contract will expire at the end of this season, and he won't be offered a new one.

All signs point towards him signing a permanent contract at Middlesbrough, who are currently pushing for top spot in the Championship.

As much as we feel not bringing anyone this month is a mistake, we do think this was the right call. We'll never forget Targett for that first half season when he was here on loan. If only the rest of his time here could have been like that.
