Newcastle United came dangerously close to breaching the Premier League's PSR three-year allowable loss limit on Sunday.

We're not sure what was more stressful, watching that horrific England display or watching Newcastle scramble to raise the funds to avoid a points deduction for breaching PSR. (We do ... it was England. By a long way.)

It took until 1 am before everything was confirmed, but Newcastle managed to scrape by thanks to two outbound deals that netted the club £68million in the form of £35million for Elliot Anderson to Nottingham Forest and £33million for Yankuba Minteh to Brighton. The Magpies also brought in Odysseus Vlachodimos from Nottingham Forest but the fee for that was rumoured, or more accurately, guessed to be only around £5million.

As well as player sales, Newcastle also took the chain off Dan Ashworth's garden and let him join Manchester United. We're not sure what the fee was that the clubs eventually agreed to, but it was somewhere in the middle of the £20million we wanted and the £2million they were willing to pay.

Newcastle were facing a 10-point penalty ahead of next season

All of that activity meant that Newcastle avoided being looked at for PSR breaches and also avoided the inevitable points deduction.

The amount that Newcastle were trying to recover seemed to grow with each passing day last week as it started off being reported at around £25million, then it crept up to £30million before jumping to £40million and now Craig Hope has claimed it was closer to £60million.

If that were the case then Newcastle would have been walloped with a 10-point deduction ahead of the new season. That is why Newcastle were at one point considering letting Liverpool have Anthony Gordon. We can't imagine how that would have gone down with the fans had they let that happen, though.

Everton managed to appeal their 10-point deduction and got it reduced to six

Of course, Everton were also slapped with a 10-point deduction but later got it down to six on appeal, before then being hit with a further two points.

A lot of fans, us included, said we should just take the punishment and move on, but a 10-point defecit would probably have counted us out of the Champions League race before a ball was kicked, and that's where we need to be aiming next season.

So while it was manic, while we lost players we'd rather not lose and while this all should have been taken care of long before last night's deadline, some props have to go to the club for avoiding the sanctions. Just, like, don't let it happen again, yeah?
