'Could be next in line': Jamie O'Hara makes excellent point as Newcastle United poised to sign Anthony Elanga
Newcastle United's signing of Anthony Elanga could help take Eddie Howe's side up another level thanks to his blistering pace.
The Magpies are already one of the more devastating counter-attacking sides in the Premier League thanks to the passing ability of their midfield three and the eye-watering pace of Anthony Gordon down the left and Alexander Isak through the middle.
Jacob Murphy is no slouch, but even he has nothing on Anthony Elanga's pace, and having two rapid wingers to pick from is going to give so many defences such massive headaches.
However, as TalkSPORT host Jamie O'Hara told Grosvenor Sport (via The Mag), Elanga is likely to benefit from the move too.
Jamie O'Hara can be sensible when he's not trying to wind up Jason Cundy to peddle rage-bait
Eddie Howe has brought so many Newcastle players up to another level, and O'Hara can see him doing that with Elanga too.
“Anthony Elanga had a great season at Nottingham Forest, but Newcastle United is a step up.
“Have Forest peaked in terms achieving their highest possible league position? I’d say so.
“You can argue that £55 million is an inflated valuation, but Anthony Gordon cost £40 million and is now starting for England. Fans were going ballistic at the time, thinking Newcastle massively overpaid for Gordon, but those doubts have since disappeared.
“Eddie Howe is adding to his portfolio of players that he’s improved and Elanga could be the next in line.
“Howe obviously thinks he can make Elanga a better player, so based on that, he’s probably worth £55 million, especially considering he’s a young player and with a long career ahead of him.”
It's not about paying for the player he is now, but the player he will be
We don't subscribe to the idea that we've 'overpaid' for Anthony Elanga, and it's for the very reason that O'Hara has mentioned.
We're not paying £55 million for the player Elanga is now; we're paying the money for the player he can be for Newcastle for years to come.
O'Hara used Anthony Gordon as an example, but we see your Anthony Gordon and raise you a Sandro Tonali and an Alexander Isak. We were accused of overpaying for those two too, but would you accept what we paid for them now as a fair fee? Would you heck.
