Some days you can't just get rid of a flop - to paraphrase Adam West's Batman. Newcastle United continue to struggle to offload one of the biggest flops of recent times.

Jamal Lewis signed from Norwich City for £15 million with a tonne of promise, none of which we've actually seen since he arrived in 2020.

Currently, the Northern Ireland international is on the books at Sao Paulo in Brazil on loan from Newcastle.

Lewis' contract at Newcastle expires in the summer and this season-long move to Brazil was seen as the last we'd see of the 26-year-old.

Jamal Lewis' Brazilian adventure could be cut short

Jamal Lewis could return to Newcastle in January

Now, though, it looks as though Sao Paulo could send the left-back home to Newcastle after picking up a bad ankle injury according to a report in UOL.

Lewis' injury may require surgery and if that turns out to be the case, Sao Paulo will terminate their agreement with Newcastle in January.

The un-flushable turd could get to float around at Newcastle once more.

Sao Paulo already have Jamal Lewis' replacement lined up

Sao Paolo sporting director Carlos Belmonte told UOL they have a replacement in mind already, and that Newcastle are aware that they are considering a termination of the agreement.

"The position is the board’s priority in the transfer market, and the dream is Wendell, from Porto. However, if the Portuguese club demands financial compensation, São Paulo will be in a complicated position in the deal.

“Jamal might not be [a São Paulo player in 2025].

“We have a clause in his contract – Newcastle could call him up at the start of the season, and we could return him. Our relationship with Newcastle is exceptional. […] He’s got an ankle problem and we’re making an assessment. It’s already been agreed with Newcastle: if he has to have surgery, he’ll go back for the surgery and the recovery process in England.”

Regardless of what happens, Lewis' contract is up in the summer and this failed £15 million experiment will finally end.
