It wasn't too long ago that we floated the idea of bringing Andy Carroll back to Newcastle United to bolster the 'homegrown' ranks ahead of a return to the Champions League.

Scott Carson was on the books at Manchester City for years for this very reason and while Newcastle have also looked at former Goalkeepers to do the same, we suggested bringing back Andy Carroll who has now left France after a stint at Bordeaux.

The Magpies already have plenty of goalkeepers, so it would have made more sense to bring in Carroll to fill a homegrown spot.

However, the Magpies could be beaten to his signing by Chelmsford City, who are currently in the sixth tier of the English pyramid, the National League South.

Andy Carroll could be set for a spell in the sixth tier of English football

Chelmsford City manager Angelo Harrop won't be drawn in on Andy Carroll rumours - usually a sign that something is happening

A report by The Non-League Paper has said that Chelmsford manager Angelo Harrop issued a 'no comment' response on the rumours that they are looking to bring in the imposing 36-year-old.

Andy Carroll left Newcastle United on transfer deadline day in January 2011 for a club record £35 million causing huge fan backlash at the time.

He since went on to spells at West Ham United, back to Newcastle and then Reading, West Brom, Reading again and then over to France with Amiens then Bordeaux.

Should Andy Carroll be aiming higher than the National League South?

Now without a club since leaving Bordeaux to return to England in order to be closer to his family, it seems Carroll has an interesting option on the table.

After playing in the fourth tier in France, we imagine that the levels will be pretty similar if he were to move to Chelmsford.

It does seem odd that in a time when Ashley Young was still playing Premier League football at 39, Carroll has been reduced to the Northern League South. Although, he hasn't had the best of luck with injuries which will have taken its toll.

Good luck to big Andy wherever he ends up, though.
