Newcastle United overcame a tough test yesterday as Southampton put the Magpies up against it for most of the game.
Eddie Howe's men had just four touches in the opposition box in the entirety of the second half. The only shot on target that Newcastle had all game was the one that hit the back of the net.
Joelinton made his triumphant return to full fitness after missing so much of last season. The 28-year-old Brazilian bossed the midfield for Newcastle from back to front and if anyone deserved a goal in the Newcastle side, it was him.
The way he took his goal was remarkable and a true sign of his progression under Eddie Howe. Joelinton controlled it with his left after Alexander Isak fizzed the ball into the area, brought it under his spell and curled a deft finish into the bottom corner. Joelinton of old would have tried to hit that first-time and we'd still be looking for the ball around the streets of Newcastle today.
Newcastle's newest captain, Bruno Guimaraes was especially pleased to see his good friend on the scoresheet.
Bruno was interviewed by NUFC TV after the game and the huge grin on his face as soon as Joelinton's name was mentioned could warm the deadest of hearts as he was asked how much it must have meant for him to score.
"A lot. A lot. Joe is a massive player for us. Last season, I can not say in words how much I missed him because Joe is everywhere he's working hard with the ball, without the ball, he's an unbelievable player for us. I'm very pleased for him, he deserved it. I know how much he suffered last season because he wanted to play and he couldn't. He's absolutely massive for us."
It's the bromance of the century and we're here for it all.
Bruno admitted in that interview that he's not at his best, physically, and in all honesty, it showed. At times Bruno looked leggy, like he was missing a yard of pace, however, he battled through to the end and he picked up a couple of cheap free-kicks towards the end of the game which helped us run out the clock.
When this duo are both firing on all cylinders, there aren't many better midfield partnerships in the Premier League.
