Newcastle United were devastated to learn the extent of Bruno Guimaraes' injury after the Brazilian collapsed in a heap on the pitch at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium late on in the Magpies' massive win over Spurs.

Bruno had indicated he'd picked up an issue when he signalled to the bench he needed to come off the pitch, but moments later he held up his hands telling Eddie Howe to hold off.

That was a bad idea, though, as just a minute or so later, Bruno stretched to make a challenge, and that was the end of his night.

Not only was it the end of his night, but tests later showed that he had a serious muscle injury that would keep him out for up to 10 weeks.

It's now being reported by The Chronicle that Bruno Guimaraes has returned to Brazil to be treated by doctors at his old club, Atletico Mineiro, as part of an arrangement with the Brazilian FA.

With the World Cup this summer, Brazil want to ensure Bruno is in top condition by the time the competition rolls around, while Newcastle are obviously hoping he's back well before the World Cup to help them finish the season strong.

Doctors in Brazil are claiming that Bruno's injury was just the right side of requiring surgery, which would likely have increased his recovery time.

"Bruno Guimarães continues his injury treatment at Cidade do Galo. Under the supervision of Dr. Rodrigo Lasmar and with the support of the best medical department among Brazilian clubs, the player is preparing to return to the pitch in the best possible way! May you be back on the field soon, Bruno!"
