Newcastle United's Fabian Schar was sent home from Euro 2024 last night after England knocked out Switzerland via a penalty shootout which saw the Toon defender slot away his penalty beautifully.

Suffering a similar fate in the small hours of this morning was Bruno Guimaraes who saw his dreams of lifting the Copa America with Brazil dashed after losing 4-2 on penalties to Uruguay.

In a feisty affair in Las Vegas which saw Uruguay kick seven shades of excrement out of Brazil, racking up 26 fouls but only two yellows and one red card (and even that took a VAR intervention), neither side ever looked like scoring.

Uruguay managed just one shot on target from their 17 attempts while Brazil only mustered three on target from a measly seven attempts.

The game headed straight to penalties after full-time

There is no extra time in the Copa America, so with the score tied, the full-time whistle signalled a penalty shoot-out.

Bruno was hooked on 87 minutes for Evanilson and could do no more than watch on as the penalty horror unfolded with former Newcastle target Manuel Ugarte hitting home the winning penalty for Uruguay to send them into the semi-finals.

Knowing how emotional Bruno gets, we can only imagine the devastation he must have felt in that moment.

Bruno was one of two players who had a good game for Brazil

To make matters worse for the Newcastle midfielder, he was one of just two players to receive a rating higher than a 6/10 by GOAL picking up a 7/10 along with Rodrygo.

"Up for the fight, got away with a number of fouls, one of the few to look after the ball reliably."

Bruno will have a week off before he returns to training with Newcastle after playing his 64th match since last summer. The man's earned that week off.
