Bruno Guimaraes returns on bench as Newcastle United take on PSG in final Champions League of first phase

Newcastle United are in action tonight in the Champions League as they take on Paris Saint-Germain at the Parc des Princes.

Whoever wins tonight is guaranteed a place in the knock-out phase of the competition, while the loser will face a two-legged play-off.

Eddie Howe doesn't seem to be too concerned about having to face a play-off given his team selection.

Bruno Guimaraes came through his fitness test last night but it seems he's only fit enough for a place on the bench tonight.

Newcastle's bench looks very strong tonight, but the actual starting XI is severely lacking.

Dan Burn returns to action after his broken ribs, and as expected, Lewis Miley drops back into the right-back position with Kieran Trippier on the bench. Lewis Hall, Malick Thiaw and Sven Botman make up a back five.

The midfield looks very weak with only Sandro Tonali as a regular starter. He is joined by, we assume, Joe Willock.

We hope this pays off for Eddie Howe

It's the same up top, too, as Anthony Elanga starts with Nick Woltemade, and we suspect Jacob Ramsey is playing out on the left, completing a 5-4-1/3-4-3 formation. Maybe.

Anthony Gordon, Bruno Guimaraes, Harvey Barnes, Yoane Wissa and Kieran Trippier are all on the bench, so if this experiment goes awry, Howe has the ability to change things.

It's safe to say that any confidence we had going into this game has evaporated with this team news, but we'll reserve judgment for after the full-time whistle.
