Bruno Guimaraes has been back in Brazil during the international break representing the national team and while he was there he had a chat about life at Newcastle United.
The Newcastle captain has often been rumoured to be on the way out of Tyneside with Manchester City often touted as a possible destination.
When Bruno signed a new deal at Newcastle and a £100 million release clause was inserted into his contract, many fans thought that it would only be a matter of time before it was activated and the 27-year-old would be taken away from us.
Fortunately, Newcastle boxed clever and the clause was only active for one month at a time when making a £100 million deal would have been nigh-on impossible for every club.
Transfer talk died down after that clause expired, but when Manchester City lost Rodri to a season-long injury, the speculation that Bruno would be the ideal replacement started up again with outlets pointing to the fact that Pep Guardiola had spoken to Bruno in the past.
This is something that Bruno himself has now confirmed in an interview with Globo Esporte, but it turns out it was never a big deal.
Bruno is very aware of how much Newcastle fans adore him and he feels the same way, and as good as Man City are, it doesn't seem like Guimaraes is tempted by a move.
“I believe that at my club I am an idol and I have a lot of respect. I am the captain of Newcastle and it is something that if you had asked me three years ago, my biggest dream would have been to play in the Premier League.
“Playing, being an idol, being captain is something wonderful. I really like Newcastle. Of course, having Manchester City’s interest shows that I am at a high level, but it was nothing more than interest. I know that Guardiola likes my football, it is normal to have great coaches who admire your football.
“We [Bruno and Guardiola] have spoken once. I praised his work, he praised my work, but it was nothing more than that.”
