Newcastle United bounced back from a run of horrendous form on Tuesday night by beating a poor Tottenham Hotspur side in their own backyard.

It was a result that Newcastle and Eddie Howe desperately needed, and that was reflected in the celebrations on the pitch at full-time, with Bruno Guimaraes and Kieran Trippier pushing the gaffer to the front of the group to celebrate with the fans.

It was a statement that showed how the players are still fully behind Eddie Howe and that everyone is determined to correct the poor form that has plagued the club this season.

Now, Craig Hope has written in his Newcastle Confidential column that the feelings behind those celebrations started in the dressing room after the home defeat to Brentford.

The players took a long look at themselves after the defeat to Brentford

Brentford won at St James' Park for the first time in over 90 years at the weekend, and it felt like a particularly low point in a season that has been littered with them.

Indeed, it was so bad that Bruno Guimaraes, along with other members of the leadership team, led an inquest amongst the players.

Together, they discussed the need to improve and agreed that it was as much down to them as individuals as it was for Eddie Howe to deliver instruction.

It needs to be more than just a one-off reaction

The fact that the players all came together in that moment and then carried that into the game against Spurs shows that everyone is still pulling in the right direction.

It gives the team a bit more belief heading into the tricky FA Cup tie away at Aston Villa on Saturday.

Let's just hope it wasn't a one-off reaction to that open and honest meeting after Brentford and that what they discussed has actually stuck with them for the rest of the campaign.
