Brentford boss issues update on Yoane Wissa after reported Newcastle United target left Portuguese training camp
Last week, Brentford forward Yoane Wissa left the club's training camp out in Portugal to fly back to London for talks with sporting director Phil Giles as Newcastle United declared a strong interest in signing the 28-year-old.
A lot has happened with Newcastle since then, with Alexander Isak looking increasingly likely to leave the club this summer, which would leave Newcastle desperate for a new centre-forward.
In fairness, following the departure of Callum Wilson, Eddie Howe was already desperate for a new striker, and this is where the Yoane Wissa interest comes in.
Newcastle's interest in Wissa is entirely separate from what's going on with Alexander Isak, and the club plans to press ahead with the move regardless of what happens with the Swede.
Keith Andrews is expecting Yoane Wissa back in training next week
However, despite reports of ongoing talks and Wissa's desire to move on this summer, there still seems to be no concrete advancement on the deal.
Indeed, Brentford boss Keith Andrews has told the media (via The Mirror) that he's expecting Wissa back in training next week.
"He has gone back to London. It was his decision, obviously because of speculation.
"There are clubs interested and he felt it was the right thing to go back to London. It's simple really, he folds back into the group next week when we come back to training."
Newcastle bid £25 million for £40m-rated Yoane Wissa
Newcastle have seen one bid knocked back by Brentford, who are demanding over £40 million for Wissa. Newcastle reportedly went in at £25 million, despite this, and despite the fact that Nottingham Forest had already had the same bid rejected earlier in the summer.
Everything has been drowned out by the Alexander Isak speculation now, so we're not sure what the current state of play is with Wissa. The last time we heard, the clubs were in talks to thrash out a suitable deal rather than going through incremental bids and knockbacks.
Newcastle fans are hoping that the club's streak of procrastinating until they get gazumped by another club is broken and the deal gets done with Tottenham and Nottingham Forest both keen on Wissa.
