Things go from bad to worse for Eddie Howe as his makeshift side suffered their fourth Premier League defeat of the season.

When your star man is the goalkeeper after a defeat, it tells you all you need to know about the game. Kieran Trippier, the man who is usually the glue that keeps the side together, has become unstuck lately and is more often the cause of problems rather than the solution. The man is in desperate need of a rest even if he won't admit it.

Lewis Miley made his first Premier League start for Newcastle and, even though he didn't last the whole game, he was close to picking up the Player of the Match, but Pope's saves were just too good.

We hate being negative, and we even feel a bit guilty for the score we gave Trippier, but he's been skating by on luck more than anything lately, and there's no denying he was way off the pace today. Maybe not worth having a go at him as he's walking off the pitch, but still, poor.

This was two games too far for Howe and the lads

Nick Pope hasn't had many busier nights in goal for Newcastle

Nick Pope – 8 ⭐️

He made eight saves and commanded his box well, but couldn't keep Bournemouth at bay by himself. Beaten at the near post by Solanke for the first and perhaps could have done more for the second, but made a world-class stop to prevent 3-0 right at the death.

Kieran Trippier – 3

Tripps plumbed new depths with this performance, unfortunately, and he's put in some shockers over the past few weeks. He won just one of his seven duels, gave possession away 28 times, and looked miles off the pace both mentally and physically throughout.

Jamaal Lascelles (c) – 6

He was the pick of the back four, although that's not saying a lot. Much like Pope, he did everything he could to keep us in the game. He must have been having flashbacks to the bad old days here, though, as he came under constant pressure from the first whistle.

Fabian Schär – 6

He showed the most composure of anyone in green but was dragged down to his teammates' levels by the end, descending into cheap losses of possession and poor decisions. Had a tough time up against Solanke and was caught napping a little bit for the opener.

Lewis Hall – 5

Hall found himself up against Bournemouth's most dangerous attacking player and battled well, though he undoubtedly had a difficult time of it. He was unlucky to be hooked at the interval yet again and things didn't improve at all with him off the pitch.

Sean Longstaff – 4

Much like Trippier, Longy seems to be running on fumes at the moment. This was another really poor display, summed up by him wasting our best chance of the game at 2-0. His defensive contribution was next to non-existent and he was sloppy on the ball.

Lewis Miley – 7

Bruno leaves very big boots to fill, but Miley can be proud of his effort on his full league debut. He was tidy in possession, showed composure far beyond his years, and never shied away even when things were going against us. He's got a massive future.

Joe Willock – 6

This wasn't his sort of game at all, though on the rare occasions he was found in good positions he looked our most threatening attacking player. Had to do a lot of dirty work, which he isn't typically known for, and put in a hell of a shift off the ball.

Miguel Almirón – 5

Miggy was forced off after just 31 minutes with what looked to be a hamstring injury but it didn't look like it was going to be his night anyway. There was plenty of huffing and puffing, as always, but not much quality attacking play on show.

Anthony Gordon – 6

He started up front, then was quite swiftly moved out to the left, before ending up back leading the line again in the second half. That disruption probably didn't help his performance, but he was still one of the better players in green and never gave up the ghost.

Joelinton – 5

We thought the days of seeing Big Joe as a striker were done, but needs must at the moment. He battled relentlessly but finds it much, much harder against central defenders than he does against midfielders, and this was his poorest game for a long while.

Matt Ritchie – 5

We thought the days of seeing Ritchie in the first team were done, too but needs must and all that. He wasn't great but didn't shirk anything.

Tino Livramento – 5

Came on at left-back for Hall at half-time and didn't look completely comfortable there. Like Schär, was somewhat culpable for the opener.

Ben Parkinson – 5

Parky was handed a thankless task on his competitive debut, being asked to lead the line with his team already trailing. Didn't disgrace himself at all.

Emil Krafth – N/A

Only got a minute, so it's impossible to rate him, but we will say that it's fantastic to see him back in league action after such a long absence.

Next up for the Magpies

Last season's home game against Chelsea was a cracker

A bloody good rest, hopefully, though we do have quite a few key players away on international duty.

Following the break, Chelsea are the visitors to St James' on Saturday the 25th of November for a very old-fashioned 3 p.m. kick-off.

Howay Eddie's severely depleted Mags!
