Newcastle United's prize for beating Fulham last week in the FA Cup was another away tie, this time against either Blackburn Rovers or Wrexham who had yet to play when the draw was made.

Blackburn Rovers overcame an early scare by the Welsh side to comfortably progress to the next round where Ewood Park will host Newcastle for the first time since an FA Cup tie in 2019.

Always an interesting fixture because of the Alan Shearer connection, it has thrown up a few shocks in the past, although hopefully not this time with a place in the FA Cup quarter final awaiting the victors.

Not long to wait

The date has now been set for the clash which will take place on 27th February at Ewood Park with a 7:45pm kick-off. The game will be broadcast live on the BBC.

The Newcastle/Blackburn connection goes beyond Alan Shearer now with the current Rovers boss being a former Magpie himself.

Jon Dahl Tomasson had a spell in the black and white which showed a lot of promise as the young Dane was scoring for fun in pre-season, but when it came to the Premier League he just couldn't seem to find the net.

Tomasson will be out for blood

Hailed as a flop and moved on after just one season, Tomasson went on to have an amazing career, scoring goals for fun with AC Milan and in two spells with Feyenoord.

We're sure he will want to get one over on his former employers, especially given the torrid time he had here, but Newcastle should have more than enough to see off Championship opposition - although, lower league opponents often seem to be where we slip up.

There are still some huge teams left in the competition who could be waiting for us in the next round, but we have to deal with Blackburn first. Bring it on.
