Newcastle United looked very refreshed after the international break putting Chelsea to the sword at St James' Park this afternoon.

The Magpies turned on the style in the second half after going in at the break all square thanks to Alexander Isak's opener which was then cancelled out by a superb Raheem Sterling free-kick.

The second half got off to a flying pace and Chelsea just couldn't keep up. Newcastle took the lead via a superb Jamaal Lascelles header which was followed up 90 seconds later by a powerful Joelinton drive after he latched on to a poor backpass by the oldest man to ever play the game, Thiago Silva (okay, that's not factual, but he is getting on a bit).

Chelsea captain Reece James saw red in the second half

Between Newcastle's third and fourth goals Reece James was given his marching orders by the ref for a second yellow card and soon after Newacstle had the game wrapped up and put under the tree well in time for Christmas thanks to a brilliant Anthony Gordon finish.

Mr Alan Shearer labelled it as a 'big win' on X and he most certainly isn't wrong. Not just in terms of keeping up the chance for the top four, but sweeping aside one of the big six in that fashion with such a depleted squad sends out a huge message to the Premier League.

Shearer put out a couple of other good posts during the game, celebrating Alexander Isak's opener with a 'Boooooom' and then posting about Joelinton's massive first-half miss, before giving him props for his goal.

Newcastle were excellent from back to front today

The Brazilians bossed the midfield for Newcastle today as Bruno Guimaraes was back to his play-dictating best. Lewis Miley had a cracking game too, setting up the opening goal with a beautifully weighted pass for Isak.

Nobody had a bad game, but Jamaal Lascelles' goal will go a long way to making people forget about his errors, especially as it contributed to such an outstanding scoreline.

Bring on PSG!
