Newcastle United flop Jamal Lewis made history by becoming the first British player to sign for Brazilian club Sao Paulo.

The former Norwich City man moved to Brazil on loan at the end of the summer and will see out the rest of his Newcastle contract there before becoming a free agent next summer.

Sao Paulo have previously spoken of their intent to keep hold of Lewis once his loan expires, but he will still have to prove his worth.

Brazilian journalist Filipe Geudes has provided an update to Geordie Boot Boys on Lewis's start to life in Brazil.

It has been a bumpy start for Jamal Lewis at Sao Paulo

It sounds very much like a mixed bag for the 26-year-old but he may be starting to turn the corner.

“It has been a hard start to his journey. He has had three chances in the starting XI, drawing one, losing one then winning one.

“After his last game as a starter, a 3-0 victory against Bahia, he was benched. The coach chose to use a centre-back at left-back instead.

“But, in this game, he was subbed on and provided the winning assist. After this our supporters showed more patience and he may have more chances.

“Most of the criticism about him are about his construction skills. He’s always trying the easier pass, usually to our centre-backs or defensive midfielders. It seems like a natural lack of confidence.

“He’s struggling on the defence as well. Here in Brazil we have many skilful wingers and he needs to adapt.”

Newcastle United have seen the last of Jamal Lewis

Whatever happens with Sao Paulo, he will cease to become Newcastle's problem next summer as his contract expires in June and there's practically zero chance of an extension being offered.

Things just never clicked for Jamal Lewis at Newcastle despite arriving with tonnes of promise and a hefty £15 million transfer fee.

Eddie Howe had spoken about giving him a chance when he arrived, but he clearly didn't impress in training as his appearances were limited to pre-season friendlies.
