Vincent Kompany is trying to build a Bayern Munich squad capable of reclaiming the Bundesliga title and is doing so at the expense of Newcastle United.

The former Burnley boss who got the Lancashire club relegated from the Premier League only to be awarded with a job at one of the top teams in Europe, has already fended off Premier League interest in Crystal Palace winger Michael Olise with Newcastle among several clubs hoping to temp the Frenchman with a move.

Olise has now been confirmed as a Bayern Munich player freeing up Kompany to move on to his next target.

Bayern Munich are now said to be close to signing another Premier League midfielder who has also been linked with a move to St James' Park this summer.

Joao Palhinha is closing in on a £47m move to Bayern Munich

Joao Palhinha was touted as an ideal signing for Newcastle

Fulham's Joao Palhinha has been touted as a possible target for Eddie Howe this summer, although he never felt like a target that was near the top of the list.

Even if he was, though, it seems that the Portuguese is destined for Germany with the Daily Mail reporting that he's already undergone a medical and is set to follow Olise through the door in a £47million move.

As we said, we never put much faith in the Palhinha links to begin with so we're not reeling about this one so much.

It has been a frustrating summer so far

It has been a frustrating summer so far in that so many players who have been linked with Newcastle have already gone on to join other clubs.

However, out of those many, only a few were ever likely to have been real targets. In fact, only Tosin Adarabioyo's switch to Chelsea feels like one that truly got away.

We have always said that Newcastle prefer to do their business away from the media, so while we're focusing on players who are being reported daily, the club are probably working on someone who hasn't even been mentioned yet.
