Newcastle's reborn winger Anthony Gordon showcased his blistering pace on the opening weekend of the 2023/24 Premier League campaign, registering a top speed of 22.14 miles per hour.
The Scouser was excellent in the 5-1 demolition of Unai Emery's Aston Villa side, regularly causing Matty Cash problems down the Villans' right and drawing seven fouls in the game.
It wasn't just his first touch and intelligence that caught the eye, though, it turns out he also clocked the highest top speed in the entire league in gameweek one.
Burnley's Ameen Al-Dakhil finished second in the rankings, followed by Wolves' Pedro Neto and Nottingham Forest debutant Anthony Elanga. Kyle Walker of Manchester City was fifth and was by far the oldest player on the list at 33 years of age.
According to the data, Gordon was notably faster than his Premier League peers. He'll need to find another 5mph or so if he wants to match legendary sprinter Usain Bolt's recorded top speed of nearly 28mph, though!
#1 Anthony Gordon (Newcastle United)
#2 Ameen Al-Dakhil (Burnley)
#3 Pedro Netro (Wolverhampton Wanderers)
#4 Anthony Elanga (Nottingham Forest)
#5 Kyle Walker (Manchester City)
Speed obviously isn't everything, but it's clearly a big part of our game plan under Eddie Howe.
Plenty of people have questioned Gordon since his £40 million (plus £5 million in add-ons) move from Everton in January, but if the Villa game is anything to go on it could prove to be another fantastic transfer by the club's leadership. We even got him for 25% off, too!
