Anthony Gordon is starting to resemble former Newcastle United fan-favourite star on the pitch
Anthony Gordon picked up another England cap last night as the Newcastle United winger terrorised the Welsh defence in the Three Lions' 3-0 win at Wembley.
Gordon's Newcastle teammate Dan Burn was an unused substitute on the night and is likely to feature against Latvia in Riga on Tuesday evening.
Last night, Anthony Gordon saw a lot of the ball and looked to be very up for the game, getting into some very dangerous positions.
And this is where the point of this article comes in...
Anthony Gordon is starting to play like ASM
At full time, I received the following text message: "Gordon seems to be all show at the moment. He played really well, but no real end product." To which I responded, "He’s got a case of the Saint-Maximins".
Allan Saint-Maximin used to absolutely wow fans with his footwork and ability to absolutely baffle defenders, but when it came to actual output, there was often very little. Don't get me wrong, he did create some top chances and scored some banging goals, but more often than not, his output was poor.
That was Gordon last night. Every cross he played hit the first man, every shot was right at the 'keeper. In the opening minutes, he had a great effort saved by Karl Darlow; we'd be remiss if we didn't mention that one, but everything else came to nothing.
Get working on that end product, Anthony
Unlike Saint-Maximin, however, we can't fault his endeavour right now. We could, and did last season, but this season he seems to have recovered his passion for the game.
Gordon will graft all game, but we need the Gordon of two years ago back. The one who was creating and scoring regularly.
The last thing we need is another Allan Saint-Maximin.
