Former Sunderland goalkeeper Jordan Pickford has admitted that Newcastle United forward Anthony Gordon "wanted to leave" Everton for the Magpies in January 2023.

23-year-old Gordon made his England debut against Brazil at Wembley on Saturday and was arguably the best player in the Three Lions side that night with the most shots, completed dribbles and one of the most touches.

Gordon's inclusion into the England squad was inevitable, his performances for Newcastle this season have been nothing short of brilliant and has been a key player for Toon boss Eddie Howe all campaign.

It was then revealed by his former team mate that he wanted out of Everton. He hasn't looked back since.

Pickford has respect for Gordon despite leaving Everton

Pickford may not have been pleased that Gordon left to join his former sides biggest rivals, but he's still impressed with his performances throughout the season.

He told BBC 5 Live: "Ant wanted to leave and he went to Newcastle, and I think he has been their best player with his performances for them this season.

"He's been consistent in picking up goals so credit to him."

Gordon has enjoyed a stellar season both scoring and creating goals. With 15 goal involvements in the Premier League, more than any other Newcastle player in the league.

Gordon could feature for England again tonight

After impressing at Wembley on Saturday, it should be a given that Gordon plays again tonight against Belgium.

With a lengthy injury list, which Southgate admits he "hasn't experienced before" there isn't really much choice for him in terms of attacking options.

Other potential starters include Marcus Rashford and Jarrod Bowen but we all hope that Gordon gets his chance to shine against another top national team.

So Gordon could reunite with Pickford again and garner a bit more praise as well.

England's game against Belgium kicks off at 19:30pm tonight.
