Anthony Gordon addresses rumours about potential transfer to Liverpool as rumours resurface
Newcastle United have to endure a lot of talk about their biggest stars being poached by 'Big Six' teams, as the media are convinced that only their favourites are worthy of having world-class players.
Obviously, no club is immune from the transfer rumour mill; this isn't uniquely a Newcastle United problem, but as Eddie Howe tries to build a team that can break through that 'Big Six' ceiling, the club are likely to recruit more and more players who have the ability to slot into those teams we're chasing.
That's just how the game works, but as soon as any of our players display that talent, journalists insist that one of the media darlings are entitled to come and take them away.
The media played a big part in ensuring Alexander Isak got his move to Liverpool in the summer by relentlessly reporting on the rumours and making sure it was everywhere you looked. Now it looks like they're about to do it again with Sandro Tonali and Anthony Gordon.
Liverpool and Arsenal are being linked with a summer move for Anthony Gordon
Once again, it's Liverpool and Arsenal who are being touted as the ones interested in taking Anthony Gordon away from Tyneside, much like it was with Isak 12 months ago. However, the difference this time is that Anthony Gordon last night publicly shut down the rumours when speaking to The Chronicle.
"I haven't seen them. What are they saying?" It's the same old, same old. I think they just pick names out of a hat. I haven't heard anything; they might want to tell me before they tell you (the media).
"I have gone through enough transfer stuff now to know that it is all a load of rubbish.
"I am focused on me and focused on the team, I am focused on right now. You look too far in the future and you start to underperform. And believe me I have done that (before) and I am not going to do that now."
Has Anthony Gordon redeemed himself?
How are Newcastle United fans feeling now about losing Anthony Gordon this summer?
The big question over Anthony Gordon for Newcastle fans right now is, has his recent upturn in form done enough to convince you he should stay at Newcastle?
There have been times this season where I'd have given Gordon a lift to Liverpool if he wanted to go, but after four goals last night and his improved performances of late, we're starting to remember why we all fell in love with him in the first place.
If the winger/striker can continue to impress for the remainder of the season, we'll be begging the club to resist any approaches for the England star.
