If it wasn't for bad luck we're pretty sure Newcastle United would have no luck at all. While we're obviously not the only team that suffers injuries, it's the timing of ours that really sticks in your craw.

Heading into a cup final with key players missing is the Newcastle United way. Nick Pope was the main culprit last time around getting himself sent off in the game before the final, ironically, against Liverpool. The stopper's red card saw him banned for the final and with Martin Dubravka cup-tied and Karl Darlow injured, it fell to Loris Karius to play his first game in two years.

Fast forward two years and Anthony Gordon repeats the feat getting sent off by the same referee resulting in him being banned for the final.

But just to make sure Newcastle's already small chance of winning against Liverpool was as tiny as possible, Lewis Hall required surgery on a foot injury and is now unavailable for the rest of the season.

Newcastle will be without Anthony Gordon, Lewis Hall and Sven Botman at Wembley

Lewis Hall was Newcastle's most in-form player in recent games and losing him is probably worse than losing Anthony Gordon.

But Hall isn't the only one likely to sit out the rest of the season with Sven Botman also set to undergo surgery. The Dutchman has an issue with his knee which Craig Hope says will also need surgery as the club are not willing to take any risks, and as a result, he will also miss the rest of the season.

With the greatest of respect to Botman, that's not as big of a miss as he's hardly been available all season, so we're not losing anything as such. It's still a huge blow, especially after he's missed so much football with a problem on his other knee.

Sven Botman is the Jonathan Woodgate of the new generation

The full extent of Botman's injury and expected layoff isn't known yet, but if he is going for surgery, we don't see him coming back during this campaign.

It's definitely a worry that Botman has needed knee surgery on both knees at such a young age.

Are we looking at another Jonathan Woodgate? Outstanding defender with legs made of breadsticks?
