Newcastle United's Bruno Guimaraes got his summer underway in the early hours of Tuesday morning as Brazil kicked off their Copa America campaign against Costa Rica.

The 26-year-old Newcastle midfielder played the full 90 minutes for Brazil in California and found himself up against a stubborn Costa Rica as Bruno's boys were held to a 0-0 draw in their opening game.

Brazil absolutely dominated the game with 74% possession and 19 shots, however, only three of those were on target.

The forwards were in a wasteful mood and GOAL hailed Rodrygo and Vinicius Jr as 'woeful' as they gave their player ratings for the game.

Despite Brazil's domination, the player ratings were quite average with the aforementioned duo only picking up fives for their efforts while there were also plenty of sixes.

Newcastle's midfield talisman was one of the few to come away with a seven and a complimentary write-up.

"Stood out in terms of controlling the match. An absolute unit in the midfield who ran the tempo."

Brazil have lost their spark of late and wor Bruno has his work cut out for him if he's to drag this lot to a Copa America trophy.

Still, this is what happens when you don't take Joelinton. That's karma.

Nobody puts Joey in the corner.
