It may have taken longer than we'd have liked, but Alexander Isak has finally mentioned Newcastle United and the fanbase after completing his £125 million move to Liverpool.

The 25-year-old employed every dirty tactic available to him to force through his move this summer, resulting in a fall from grace the likes of which we've never seen before.

After finally getting his way, we thought there'd maybe be a little bit of an acknowledgement of the club and the fans yesterday, but it has taken 24 hours for Isak to break his silence.

Granted, the bitter-sounding 37-word announcement by the club probably doesn't deserve a response from Isak, but the thousands of Newcastle United fans who went from singing his name to being utterly heartbroken certainly do.

Alexander Isak has finally thanked the Newcastle United fans

Taking to Instagram, Isak posted a highlight reel of his time at Newcastle along with a statement sharing his gratitude for three years on Tyneside.

"I want to express my gratitude to my teammates, the staff, and above all, the city of Newcastle and all the amazing supporters for the three unforgettable years we shared together.

"Together, we have written history and brought the club to the place where it truly belongs. It has been an honour to be part of the journey from reaching the Champions League to winning the first trophy in over 70 years.

"Forever grateful. Thank you, Newcastle."

How will this statement change the reception he gets next time he comes to St James' Park?

For many, it's a case of too little too late, but there were plenty of words of encouragement from Newcastle fans in the comments of Isak's post, too, showing that not everybody has boarded the hate train.

It's going to be interesting to see how Isak is received when he returns to St James' Park next season. The game at Anfield will be a decent barometer, but it's all about his first appearance at St James' Park for us.

Enough time may have passed before he returns that it may not be much of an issue, particularly if Nick Woltemade and Yoane Wissa have been performing well.
