Despite England once again failing to bring home the European Championship Trophy after partaking in the final, there's still a chance Gareth Southgate will keep his job.

Euro 2024 was widely believed to be Gareth Southgate's last tournament in charge of England with his contract due to expire in December.

However, after reaching another final, the FA are now said to be keen to keep Southgate on and believe he's the right man to lead the Three Lions at the World Cup in 2026.

A huge majority of England fans are likely to disagree, and perhaps even Southgate himself who has refused to be drawn on whether or not he will change his mind and stay on as England boss.

Can we not convince Pep Guardiola to take over?

Eddie Howe is high on the list to replace Gareth Southgate

Should Southgate and the FA part ways, that will leave the job vacant and Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe is a firm favourite to land the gig.

There's no doubt in my mind that Eddie Howe would be perfect for England, but just not yet. Not that I don't think he'd do a good job now, I'd just prefer he remained at Newcastle. He's still got unfinished business.

Other candidates for the role are Graham Potter, Mauricio Pochettino and Frank Lampard. Potter would get my vote out of those, three. If England were to bring in another foreign manager there's only one man for the job and he's currently a bit busy dominating club football with Manchester City. Although we're sure Pep Guardiola would prefer to lead Spain than England.

Alan Shearer is not ready to see Eddie Howe leave Newcastle

Alan Shearer has also weighed in on the debate and while he said on The Rest Is Football podcast that he thinks Eddie Howe is an 'outstanding' candidate, like us, he's not ready to see him leave Newcastle.

“I’m for England and English managers. I don’t want Eddie Howe but he would be the outstanding candidate.

“There is a lot going on at Newcastle, the guys who appointed Eddie have now left.

“He would without doubt be an outstanding candidate but we wouldn’t want to lose him at Newcastle.”
