It was a mixed night for Newcastle United players as England beat Greece 3-0 in Athens.

Tino Livramento watched on from the sidelines for the fifth successive England game while third/fourth choice goalkeeper Odysseas Vlachodimos not only leaked three goals, he was actually credited with one of them after Jude Bellingham's shot came back off the post to strike Ody and roll into the net.

Meanwhile, Lewis Hall was handed his international debut when coming off the bench at half-time and he did not look out of place.

Hall has grown into a star at Newcastle this season after a difficult start to life on Tyneside and he's not looking back.

Alan Shearer was impressed with Lewis Hall last night

Naturally, Alan Shearer had something to say about Hall's performance last night with the Geordie hero always looking for a way to praise Newcastle players.

Speaking on The Rest Is Football podcast, Shearer touched on the tough start to life at Newcastle and how far Hall has come in a short amount of time.

“There is not exactly a load of players around at left-back so when he was given his opportunity and came on in the second half I thought he did really, really well.

“He looked comfortable. Played a small part in the Bellingham goal with the way they played out from the back. Good night for him as well.

“It wasn’t all plain sailing when he first came to Newcastle, he has had to be patient, but slowly but surely he has found himself a regular this season and there has been a massive improvement. He deserved his chance.”

Lewis Hall needs to take this opportunity with both hands

As Shearer said, there's not a lot of competition at left-back for England so this is the time for Hall to make that position his own.

His 45-minute appearance last night will not have hurt his chances, that's for sure.

We're absolutely buzzing for Hall and his half-time introduction last night actually made watching the game semi-worthwhile. Still hate the Nations League though.
