Alan Shearer gives us a new word to use instead of 'toothless' to describe Newcastle United's attack after Aston Villa defeat
The word 'toothless' has been used so many times to describe Newcastle United up front this season that it's starting to lose its impact.
We've used it several times, but so many other outlets have used the same word when discussing Newcastle's actions in the final third of the field.
In truth, it is probably still the best term out there, but we like a bit of variety here, so we were glad that Alan Shearer dropped another perfect word for Newcastle's attack when ranting about Sunday's defeat to Aston Villa on this week's The Rest Is Football podcast.
Shearer drew comparisons to the game against Wolverhampton Wanderers last week when Eddie Howe's men simply could not find a way through the Wolves back line, and despite putting in a glut of crosses, they failed to connect with any of them in any meaningful way.
Newcastle United's attack is 'lightweight' according to Alan Shearer
It may be a tad harsh to compare Sunday's defeat to that horrendous game at Molineux, but there were similarities and Alan Shearer was right to point them out again, calling Newcastle's attack 'lightweight', which we absolutely love as a descriptive word for whatever it is that's going on up front of late.
"We're just not showing enough up front. We're just lightweight, there's not enough punch, there's not enough skill."
From our perspective, it looks like there's just no desire. Lewis Miley was pinging in some absolutely quality crosses, but nobody was anywhere near them. Yoane Wissa was strolling into the area rather than busting a gut to meet one of these crosses.
Alan Shearer is clearly not happy with Anthony Gordon
Shearer continued his rant by picking out individual players for their poor efforts and we don't blame him at all.
"Anthony Gordon had another poor game, another poor game. Champions League and league form is completely different. Wissa was poor, didn't offer anything. (Nick) Woltemade, when he come on, nothing. Barnes struggled. Elanga came on, nope, nothing."
Micah Richards is getting too much of a kick out of seeing Big Al raging at the Toon, so hopefully we can give Alan something to gloat about soon. Maybe reversing that 2-0 deficit in the Carabao Cup. Yeah right!
Can we not ask Shearer to come in as a striker coach for a few months?
