A journalist with affiliations to Sky Sports today made claims that Aaron Ramsdale had agreed to join Newcastle United this summer.

The Arsenal 'keeper has long been linked with Newcastle after falling down the pecking order under Mikel Arteta following the arrival of David Raya.

Newcastle currently have Nick Pope as their first-choice stopper but this season he has played only 19 games in a 52-game season after picking up a bad shoulder injury - the second of his career.

So perhaps Newcastle are looking to replace Pope or at least make sure they have a back-up of a similar quality given that Martin Dubravka hasn't exactly covered himself in glory this season.

The deal for Ramsdale isn't as close as has been reported

After James Green claimed that Ramsdale's agent had said that the 26-year-old had agreed to join Newcastle this summer, the player himself took to X to question the validity of the story with a simple post.

"News to me"

It seems that Green has been fed some duff information, or has at the very least jumped the gun in putting the story out there forcing Ramsdale to go on the defensive.

"ITKs" are the bane of football journalism but every so often their lies pick up traction

After a couple of years doing this job, however, I'm pretty confident in saying that it was the former. There's no end of people claiming to be in the know who spread information around to people they know can get the story out there.

We're not sure what they get out of it, but from our point of view, it gives us something to write about. And in cases like this, it gives us something to write about twice as we get to call it out for the BS it is.

We waited on this Ramsdale one for a while, eventually deciding to cover it after it picked up a lot of traction from big outlets. It seems a lot of people were taken in by this one, but Ramsdale wasn't having it.

Of course, this doesn't mean it won't happen eventually, but the story that it's a done deal seems very premature.
