'A stupid thing to do': Alan Shearer visibly frustrated when asked about Anthony Gordon's red card

The big talking point of the day isn't that Newcastle United crashed out of the FA Cup at the hands of Brighton, but that Anthony Gordon got himself sent off in that game and will now miss the Carabao Cup final.

Just as was the case two years ago, Newcastle United find themselves without a key player heading into the date at Wembley thanks to a red card.

Anthony Gordon's shove in the face of Jan Paul van Hecke was seen as enough cause for Anthony Taylor to throw up the red card and give Gordon his marching orders.

Eddie Howe has hinted at an appeal, but we don't see a world in which that decision gets overturned.

On the latest The Rest Is Football Podcast, Gary Lineker throws it over to Alan Shearer to talk about the sending off, and the former Newcastle man can barely get his words out, he's so annoyed.

"I haven't got a clue what he's doing ... I know you get drawn in the moment in the game and all of that but there has to be in your mind thinking ... you actually should know that anything stupid and you're in danger of missing the Carabao Cup final.

"I just think 'oh my god', I mean, that's a massive blow to Newcastle. A stupid thing to do. Not only did he cost his team yesterday, he could cost his team in the Carabao because he's one of Newcastle's big hitters."

Micah Richards tried to give Gordon the benefit of the doubt

Micah Richards jumped in to try and give Gordon the benefit of the doubt, noting that Van Hecke's head was down and that Gordon was likely going for a push on his shoulder or chest, but because of where Van Hecke's head was, he connected with his head.

That is likely to be Newcastle's best chance of a defence if they want to try and appeal the decision, but again, we just don't see it working out for the Magpies here.

Shearer went on to say that he doesn't want to add to the pile-on as he knows that Anthony Gordon will be feeling worse than anyone about it, but ultimately says "you can't defend him, it's a stupid thing to do".
