Rumours have been intensifying this week that Newcastle United have already begun to make their move to sign Ipswich Town striker Liam Delap in the summer.

With Ipswich's stay in the Premier League set to end this season, the Tractor Boys are expected to lose striker Liam Delap thanks to a £30 million release clause that becomes active when they are relegated.

The former Manchester City forward has had an impressive season for Ipswich and has caught the attention of several big clubs.

Newcastle are said to be very keen, with a report suggesting this week that Eddie Howe has spoken to Delap personally about a potential move.

Eddie Howe is clearly a huge fan of Liam Delap

Inevitably, Eddie Howe was asked about Liam Delap in his press conference on Friday morning, with Howe lavishing the 22-year-old with praise.

“He’s a pivotal player for them, there is no denying that. He’s had a very good season.

“He’s got big strengths. Very strong, powerful runner. Knows where the goal is. He’s had a really good season. He’s always had a lot of potential. You could see from the very early times we’ve played against him previously what a threat he can be.”

The St James' Park atmosphere could help Liam Delap make up his mind tomorrow

Bringing in a young forward with Premier League experience to compete with Alexander Isak for just £30 million is the dream scenario for Newcastle this summer.

It is becoming more and more unlikely that Newcastle will win the race for free agent Jonathan David, so the Magpies are going to have to spend money to bring in support for Alexander Isak and the deal for Liam Delap is about as good as it gets.

We expect that his trip to St James' Park tomorrow will give Delap a great insight into what it would be like to play for Newcastle, and he could make his mind up on the spot.
