Eddie Howe's uncanny ability to keep hold of players that most people would have released long ago at Newcastle United failed him this summer with two ageing favourites finally leaving the club.
Matt Ritchie and Paul Dummett were allowed to leave Newcastle this summer after their contracts expired, although Dummett almost got a stay of execution if the FA Cup had gone the other way and Newcastle had qualified for Europe again.
Matt Ritchie found himself a new club before the season started as he headed back to where it all began for him at Portsmouth.
Meanwhile, Paul Dummett has been without a club since he left St James' Park.
Several Championship clubs have run their eye over the 32-year-old former Wales international, but now journalist Graeme Bailey has told Geordie Boot Boys that Wolverhampton Wanderers could turn to Dummett to solve a defensive crisis.
Yerson Mosquera was forced off the field with an injury as Wolves played Aston Villa at the weekend and it now looks like he could miss the rest of the season leaving a hole to be filled in Wolves' squad.
With the next transfer window so far away, Wolves could turn to the free agent market where Paul Dummett is waiting.
Graeme Bailey told Geordie Boot Boys that Dummett's name has come up at Wolves as a potential solution.
“Paul Dummett’s name has come up.
“Wolves have been hit by the Mosquera injury, which leaves them short at the back. They are not in a good position.
“James Tomkins and Dummett have both been offered to Wolves, but I think they will try and get to January without signing anyone.
“The last we saw of Dummett was Sheffield United being linked, while Portsmouth were also keen earlier in the summer.”
