Newcastle United were ready to go up against four other clubs to sign Nigeran international midfielder as his contract ran down.

Wilfred Ndidi's Leicester City contract has expired making the 27-year-old a free agent and with Newcastle reportedly one of five Premier League clubs interested in his services, the defensive midfielder has made up his mind where his future lies.

Having signed for Leicester for £17million in 2017, Ndidi has become a regular feature at the Foxes having made 273 appearances in all competitions.

Everton and Aston Villa were also keen on Ndidi and were said to have been keen on making a move.

Wilfred Ndidi has chosen his "next" club

However, according to Liverpool World, the club that has won the race for Ndidi's signature is ... Leicester City.

Despite having technically left the club after his contract ran out, it seems that Ndidi was not ready to part ways with the Foxes and will sign another three-year deal.

Leicester City have just regained promotion to the Premier League and it seems Ndidi wants to do what he can to help them remain in the top flight beyond next season.

Wilfred Ndidi never really felt like a real Newcastle target

Ndidi was another one of those names that was linked to Newcastle this summer that never really inspired the Toon Army, so again, it's another target missed but there won't be much sleep lost over.

Newcastle keep being linked with defensive midfielders and there have been calls from fans that it's a position that needs to be filled, but in truth, there isn't really a space for one in how Eddie Howe likes to play.

We don't so much need a defensive midfielder as much as we just need Joelinton fit, or someone else who isn't scared of putting a tackle in to prevent a counter-attack.
