We've made no secret of our desire to see Jonathan David become a Newcastle United player in the summer with the Lyon star set to leave the Ligue 1 side in the summer.

Jonathan David's contract is due to expire in the summer and while he, and indeed Lyon's club president Olivier Letang have ruled out a move in January, it is becoming increasingly likely that David will leave Lyon in the summer.

Reports have suggested that Newcastle, as well as several other clubs, have already opened discussions with David's representatives over a pre-contract agreement which would be signed in January ahead of a move in the summer.

However, it appears that Lyon aren't going to go down without a fight, and with David's goalscoring form this season, it's not hard to understand why.

Lyon President says they have handed Jonathan David a new contract

Letang was speaking to After Foot RMC about the situation with David and he confirmed that Lyon have offered the 24-year-old a new deal.

“Jonathan David will not leave in January. And he already has an extension offer in his hands so the ball is in his court.”

Jonathan David sparked speculation over his future in the summer while hosting a podcast in which he spoke about a potential move.

Jonathan David is asking for £100,000-a-week from his next club

Newcastle have been linked with an interest in David since reports broke of him contemplating a move and he immediately shot to the top of our 'realistic signings' wish list.

It's believed that the Canadian international would demand a £100,000-a-week wage which should be doable for Newcastle if they manage to clear out some of the deadwood from the squad.

However, given his 13 goals in 19 games this season, he's going to be a hot property and Newcastle will have to fight off some big clubs to land their man.
