Newcastle United have been linked with a few young goalkeepers this summer as they look to find someone to challenge Nick Pope before eventually taking over his mantle.

With Loris Karius already departed and Martin Dubravka heavily linked with a move away, Newcastle are in the market for a new goalkeeper.

The original plan was to bring in someone who could immediately challenge current number one Nick Pope, but recently the brief has changed and instead, Eddie Howe is looking for someone who can learn from Pope while still being good enough to fill in if required.

The latest is that Newcastle are close to wrapping up a deal for Burnley's James Trafford who looks set to walk the same path as Nick Pope, leaving relegated Burnley to go to Newcastle.

Filip Jorgensen has made his future intentions clear

Newcastle had been previously linked with Valencia 'keeper Giorgi Mamardashvili but the Spanish side have been asking for too much money.

Also on the Magpies' radar was 22-year-old Danish U21 international Filip Jorgensen who is at Villarreal.

Chelsea had also shown interest in Jorgensen but it now looks like he is going nowhere after signing a new deal with Villarreal as reported by Fabrizio Romano.

Newcastle are now left hoping all goes well with James Trafford

Jorgensen has put an end to all speculation by signing up with Villarreal until 2029.

With Jorgensen staying put and Valencia pricing Mamardashvili out of a move, Newcastle will have their fingers crossed that all goes well with negotiations with Burnley for Trafford.

Recent reports have suggested that the club have agreed personal terms with the 21-year-old so it all comes down to agreeing the fee with Burnley.
