Gareth Southgate has hinted at the future of the England right-back position lies at Newcastle United.

While we can sit and pick apart Gareth Southgate's latest England squad, and we have, when you take into account what he said at the press conference announcing the squad, things make a teeny tiny bit more sense. For some of it at least.

Newcastle fans are understandably baffled at Anthony Gordon being overlooked again, but he did get a mention by the England boss when discussing his options as spotted by The Chronicle.

Anthony Gordon is on Southgate's radar

"You look at Jarrod Bowen has got seven goals this season already. Anthony Gordon is playing very well at Newcastle. Cole Palmer is starting to play well. It's just a changing landscape there."

However, the Scottish FA have been put in panic mode after Southgate namechecked another Newcastle player who Scotland were hoping to persuade to join their national side.

Tino Livramento has been exceptional for Newcastle in the few games he's played and that has not gone unnoticed by Southgate who mentioned him by name in the press conference when talking about the fullbacks.

Southgate is keeping his eye on Tino Livramento

"We have got options, but there aren't perhaps the experienced options we might have in other areas of the pitch.

"Some of the younger full-backs are doing well - Tino Livramento has done well in his games for Newcastle, but being with the U21s is the right thing for him at the moment as well."

The Herald Scotland picked up on this as, while Livramento has played for England at youth level, owing to the fact that he's not made a competitive senior appearance for England, he still remains eligible for Scotland (and Portugal).

It's the same situation that faces Elliot Anderson, but Livramento seems to be out in front given the namecheck by Southgate.

We knew Livramento would be Kieran Trippier's replacement at club level but it's very likely he'll do the same at international level too.
