Luton Town are now said to be considering offering £15m Newcastle United flop a contract this summer after he leaves St James' Park when his contract expires.

The Hatters suffered back-to-back relegations after their meteoric rise to the Premier League and now play in League One, where they finished in mid-table last season.

Luton are now reportedly set to offer Jamal Lewis a contract this summer when the former Norwich City man's contract expires at Newcastle next week.

It's quite a fall from grace for the player who was tipped to be the next big then when Newcastle forked out £15 million for him in 2020.

Luton Town want Jamal Lewis back at Kenilworth Road

Things never worked out for Lewis at Newcastle, regardless of who was in charge and while Eddie Howe promised to throw him a lifeline, it wasn't one that Lewis grabbed on to.

Several failed loan moves followed, which were often hampered by injury. Newcastle thought they'd finally moved him on last year when he joined Sao Paulo on loan with an option to buy, but again, injuries played their part and the Brazilian club terminated the deal.

Jamal Lewis is one of the players whose contract expires on Monday, and he will leave the club, with Alan Nixon of The Sun saying on his Patreon (via Football League World) that Luton are keen on the 27-year-old.

Will Jamal Lewis want to drop to League One?

Whether Lewis will be humble enough to drop down to League One remains to be seen, but there doesn't appear to be a huge queue for his services, so it could be Luton or nothing. Although being from Luton and having come up through their youth system, he could perhaps overlook the backwards step to help out his old club.

Lewis has still got plenty of years left in him if his past injuries haven't completely destroyed his limbs, so there's still a chance he could get his career back on track; he just may have to start from lower down the pyramid than he thought.

While we won't be losing any sleep over him leaving the club, we do wish the lad the best of luck and genuinely hope he can get his career back on track.
